RACE RULES & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
All vehicles must:
Be approved before qualifying or racing
&
Be properly tagged
It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle is maintained and able to compete safely, our team is only inspecting the following components for general safety.
Entry & Exit
Occupants must be able to enter and exit the vehicle quickly and unassisted in any position.
Firewall
All vehicles must have a full metal firewall separating occupants from engine and fuel systems.
Floorboards
Required and must:
- Cover entire area from pedals to behind seats
- Extend from outer edge to outer edge
Loose Items
Vehicles must be free of loose objects, including:
- Tools
- Sub boxes
- Jacks
- Recovery gear
- Coolers
- Fuel containers
- Clothing
Recovery Points
- Required front and rear
- Clearly marked
- Secure and rated for vehicle weight
DRIVER SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Helmet/Neck Protection
Small Tire
- Full face (dirt bike or motorcycle style)
- Open face allowed
- No beanie/skull bucket helmets
- All competitors must wear a neck brace.
Big Tire & Pro Unlimited
- Snell or DOT approved
- Must display certification sticker
- Full face strongly recommended
- HANS or Hybrid device required
- Foam neck rings are not permitted
Eye Protection
Shatter-resistant eye protection required for all competitors.
Race Suit
Small Tire
- Fire-retardant outerwear required
- Coveralls NOT approved
- Must cover neck to ankles and wrists
- One-piece suits recommended
Big Tire & Pro Unlimited
- Single-layer fire suit required (coveralls NOT approved)
- No holes, tears, or thinning
- Must be free of petroleum contamination
- Two-layer suit recommended
- Fire-resistant gloves and footwear strongly recommended
Fire Extinguishers
All classes must have:
- Two 2.5lb fire extinguishers
- One mounted outside
- One mounted inside cab
Seat Belts
Small Tire
- OEM belts acceptable (good condition)
- 5-point harness highly recommended
Big Tire & Pro Unlimited
Recovery Equipment
All vehicles must carry:
- Winch line weight or synthetic winch line
- Recovery strap
- Shackle
Vehicle Structure & Protection
Window Nets
Not required, but strongly recommended.
Doors
All vehicles must have:
- Doors or door bars
- Protection at shoulder height
Roof Protection
- Metal plate above occupants
- Hands must not pass brow bar when seated
ROLL CAGE REQUIREMENTS
Roll cages are mandatory for all classes.
3800lbs and Under
- 1.75" x .120 wall tubing (main structure)
3800 – 7000lbs
- Minimum 2" x .120 wall tubing
7000lbs and Up
- Minimum 2" x .188 wall tubing
OR
- 2" x .120 double halo with heavy trussing
Additional Requirements:
- X or Y brace behind driver
- Seat belt bar 1–2 inches below shoulders
- Minimum 5" clearance above helmeted heads
FLUIDS & ENVIRONMENT
- Participants responsible for spills
- No fluid disposal on site
ELECTRICAL
- Kill switch recommended
- Wiring must be secure and protected from abrasion
FUEL SYSTEM
Small Tire
- Securely mounted fuel tanks
- No ratchet straps or bungee cords
- No jerry cans or marine fuel cans
FUEL SYSTEM
Big Tire & Pro Unlimited
- Approved fuel cells required
- OEM tanks allowed
- Alcohol and nitromethane permitted
Small Tire Class
Definition:
Any vehicle modified for off-road recreational use.
Tire Size:
30" – 43"
Big Tire Class
Definition:
Purpose-built off-road vehicles intended for racing or competition.
Tire Size:
44" and over
Pro Unlimited Class
Definition:
This is a truly unlimited class.
- Any tire size allowed
- Must have achieved a podium finish in any off-road race event within the last two years
- First-place Big Tire winners must move up to Pro
- Course will be longer and more challenging than Big Tire
- Once entered, the only way to be removed is by placing dead last in Mountain Top Madness
